  A decade ago, three businessmen decided to revolutionize the plant nutrients and hydroponics industry.

  The trio- Michael Straumietis, Robert Higgins, and Eugene Yordanov- already had extensive combined experience in business, marketing, horticulture, and engineering when they founded Canadian Soiless Ltd in 1996.

  After its founding, Canadian Soiless was at first a retailer-wholesaler of equipment and nutrients made by other manufacturers. As the partners listened to customer feedback and researched the products they were selling, they realized these products were not specifically or properly engineered for the high-value crops grown by their customers.

  So, in 1998, they founded Polar Bear Manufacturing Ltd., a company that makes innovative, professional equipment such as heat exchangers, fans, blowers, C02 dispensers, and climate monitoring systems.

  In 1999, Polar Bear Manufacturing became worldwide distributors of high-intensity lighting systems made by Bell Lighting Technologies. Canadian Soiless and Polar Bear became hydroponics equipment industry leaders.

  Cultile`ne is a young and dynamic company.
  
  It is only a few decades ago that (mainly Dutch) greenhouse growers were looking for an alternative growing medium that would be able to satisfy their stringent conditions. Stonewool, already known for being an extremely effective insulation material, was only one of the basic materials that they experimented with. However, from the start, stonewool showed that it was evidently the most successful alternative for cultivation in the open ground.
  
  Even at this early stage, Saint-Gobain Isover, which has manufactured mineral wool since the Sixties, was aware of the opportunities in the greenhouse sector.
  
  An experimental phase, in which the possibilities were investigated, was followed by goal-oriented science-based research. Step by step, a special stonewool was developed that could successfully compete with cultivation in the open ground. This started the development that would have far-reaching consequences for growers worldwide.
  
  The substrate was a great success, and so a separate company was soon founded for its production, processing and distribution. This company was called Saint-Gobain Cultile`ne. From the start, the company has focused specifically on developing and manufacturing rockwool products that are completely tailored to use in greenhouse cultivation.
  
  After that, developments gain momentum; Cultile`ne grows and develops just as prosperously as the crops on the products it supplies to the market, which in turn enables growers and gardeners to be successful in their markets.
